I’ve given Rose Gold Bakes a little makeover! Did you notice? She’s now flying free on WordPress.org, which means she’s a self-hosted site now. Which means that I now have to do technical things quite a lot of the time. This is scary. I don’t like code. But I saw something (probably on WordPress, to be fair) that said ‘code is poetry’, and I liked it a bit more after that. Keats really should have used more of these symbols in his work: < / > [ *
What I do like is Vanilla French Toast Sticks. And I re-heally like Nutella Hot Fudge Sauce. You could put it on anything
or anyone on Valentine’s Day and it would be amazing and delicious. It’s Nutella flavour (of course) but pourable, more chocolately-tasting (because it has extra cocoa in it) and it’s served warm… it’s a delight. But we shouldn’t let it outshine the French Toast! Which is also fantastic. Vanilla scented, crispy edged, and rolled in sugar. It’s like a crepe and a doughnut had a beautiful baby. That you’re allowed to eat. I recommend making these your new love language. They will perfectly express the depth of your feelings for someone…and anyone you make them for is certain to fall in love with you in return. Hence they’re pretty much a breakfast love spell.
Both the French Toast Sticks and the Nutella Sauce are very easy to make, and pretty quick too. Especially as you can make the Nutella sauce in advance (3-4 days) and keep it in an airtight container in the fridge, simply reheating it when you need it and restoring it to its glossy, silky state.
I think French Toast Sticks (as opposed to slices of French Toast) might be the future. All that surface area means more sugar coating, and they look really pretty. And how many foods can you play Jenga with? I rest my case (*sits back comfortably*). Just make sure your pan isn’t too hot or you’ll burn them! Let the pan cool off the heat while you prepare your next lot of Sticks for frying, and remember to add a drop of oil and a knob of butter every batch you fry to ensure they don’t stick.
I hope if you make these, you love them.
French Toast Sticks with Nutella Hot Fudge Sauce
Nutella Hot Fudge Sauce
- 200 grams Nutella
- 20 grams Cocoa Powder
- 125 ml Evaporated Milk
- 2 tbsp Golden Syrup (Can use corn syrup)
- Small Pinch Salt
French Toast Sticks
- 1 x 900g loaf Unsliced White Bread
- 2 Eggs
- 250 ml Evaporated Milk
- 45 grams Caster Sugar
- 2 tsp Vanilla Extract
- 250 grams Sugar (for rolling)
Nutella Hot Fudge Sauce
Place all the ingredients for the sauce into a saucepan and melt together over a gentle heat.
Once the ingredients have melted, use a stick blender (or normal blender) to whizz away any small lumps of cocoa. If you don't have a blender, then whisk the mixture by hand.
Store in an airtight container for up to 4 days. To reheat, use a microwave in short bursts (to avoid scorching) or heat in a saucepan over a low heat.
French Toast Sticks
Cut four 1 inch slices from the loaf of bread. Cut off the crusts. Cut each slice into 3 sticks (approximately 1 inch wide). You should have 12 sticks in total.
In a deep baking dish, whisk together the eggs, evaporated milk, vanilla and sugar until thoroughly combined.
In another baking dish, or on a large plate, pour out the sugar in which you will roll the sticks once they're cooked.
Heat a frying pan large enough to cook 3 or 4 sticks at a time (otherwise you'll be standing there forever...) with a small knob of butter and a drop of vegetable or sunflower oil. You are aiming for a medium-high heat. You don't want it extremely hot, or the sticks will burn.
Place the bread sticks in the egg-milk mixture and turn to coat on all sides, pressing very gently to help the mixture soak in. You don't want to squish the sticks or soak them for too long in the mixture though, or they'll fall apart.
Shake off any excess egg-milk mixture from the sticks and place in the frying pan. Cook for about 20 seconds and then check the colour of the stick. You're aiming for golden brown. Turn the stick onto its next side, and cook until golden brown again. Do this for all 4 sides, then remove to the dish/plate of sugar and roll to coat.
Remove the sugar-coated sticks to a warm plate, and get on with the next batch of sticks.
Serve warm, with Nutella Hot Fudge Sauce.
